REVIEW: Fairest ( Lunar Chronicles 3.5 )

Fairest ( Lunar Chronicles #3.5)

Marissa Meyer

Publication date: Jan 27. 2015

Source: Bought Kindle Version

222 Pages

In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of them all?

Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.

Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from Winter, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.

                    My Thoughts

What makes a bad girl so Bad ?

I loved Fairest ! I know there are always mixed reviews from readers and I think you either love or hate these extra books in A series, but me,  I LOVE THEM !  Pretty much Marissa Meyer can do no wrong , please keep writing!  Like many of the other companion books in the Lunar Chronicles, Fairest tells us about the past of the most allusive character so far, Queen Levana.

Paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan faces a new case in an apartment building where a twisted, dangerous entity emerges from closets and doorways to terrorize the residents at night. A powerful spirit, it feeds on fear and takes the shape of its victims' worst nightmares.

Ellie and her mentor Calvin have tried to capture the same entity before, in a different house nearby, an attempt that ended in disaster. Now, with the help of her apprentice Stacey, Ellie must try again to capture the elusive shapeshifting ghost before it can claim another soul as its own.

                    My Thoughts

Hands down the creepiest Ellie Jordan yet!

Wow, I thought the Ellie Jordan novels were great before, but J.L. Bryan turned up the scary to a whole new level in the third novel in the Ghost Trapper series, Crawling Darkness!  Ellie and Stacey are called to investigate an entity who is appearing as it's victims worst fears and crawling around the walls. The house where this haunting takes place has been made into multi residential apartment complex, so Ellie Stacey and Jacob have to get the help and support of all of the neighbors in the complex to rid this truly evil spirit!

First off... soooo scary!!! I really had a hard time reading this at night, and it wouldn't have been possible if I had a closet in my bedroom. After reading crawling darkness I couldn't be more grateful that my closet is in my bathroom. Whew! One of the things I liked best about this book was that the entity appeared differently to everyone in the house, I loved hearing each persons individual scary stories about what they saw: Flesh face, space aliens, bloody Mary, it scared me so bad but I loved it. Especially that bloody Mary part, come on you know you have said her name in the bathroom with the lights off. I know I have !

Jacob took a little bit of a backseat in this one but I did love the new introduction of the smoking hot firefighter  ( see what i did there ) A fire fighter is pretty perfect for Ellie and her past.  This series is getting better and better! Can't wait to read book 4 in the Ghost Trapper series, Terminal.

Him

…I need time. Time to heal those wings and learn to use them…

Was part of the letter Rebecca Trent, Daniel Brightmore’s fiancée and best friend left when she ran away. The person he trusted the most for the past decade disappeared without giving him a second glance. She taught him how to love, believe in family and that everyone deserves a happily ever after. Now he’s struggling between wiping any traces of her from his life and drowning his sorrows away with the help of his new best friends—Don Julio and Jack Daniels.

Her

Rebecca’s past suffocated her to the point of not wanting to continue, her lifeline and the only reason to live began to withdraw from her. She wished it had been her imagination, but heard it loud and clear: “If not, there’s always a divorce, nothing is forever.” This time it became a leave or die situation. Something has got to change—she had to change. Packing light and leaving a letter behind, she takes a journey that can help her find herself through the shards of her painful childhood.

As letters, memories and stories are exchanged, two once inseparable people reconcile what’s left of their relationship. Beyond the confines of everything they built together, they’re left with two lonely people searching for what it means to be whole. Will they find meaning under their bruised psyches or will their pasts get the better of them?

                    My Thoughts

Is is possible that I loved Next to You even more than I loved Where Life Takes You... the answer is YES!!!

Footsteps in the attic. Toys that play by themselves. A dark presence in an upstairs room.

Paranormal investigator Ellie Jordan faces a difficult new case. Her new clients are a family haunted by multiple ghosts and a poltergeist that wrecks their home at night. Their seven-year-old son’s invisible friends may not be imaginary at all, but the restless spirits of dead children.

To clear her clients’ house of the dangerous entities, Ellie must unravel the mysterious deaths of another family who lived in the old mansion more than a hundred and sixty years ago—and she must do it before the ghosts can carry out their malevolent designs on her clients and their children.

                    My Thoughts

The Gang is back and better than ever!

This series is great! It has a lot of room to grow and explore even more old and erie places and haunted houses. Cold Shadows, Part two in the Ellie Jordan Series, is even easier to read than the first novel, Ghost Trapper. Now that the main characters are established it was very easy to jump right in with Ellie and Stacey to solve this new case. Even though this is still a haunting mystery, it is so different from the previous case, and I have no doubt that every book in this series will be unique and different and definitely not predictable.

I was very glad that Jacob was still in the picture, and I do hope that he makes even more of an appearance in the up and coming novels.. perhaps, and this is just me, but I feel like there could possibly be something between Jacob and Ellie...

Putting my personal love triangle aside, This is a great new series and Cold Shadows does not dissapoint. As always, I am a huge J.L. Bryan fan and his books always make my automatic read list !

Plot : Great, each book is a different haunting to deal with. love the layout of this series. Excited to read more in the series.

Characters: Love! J.L. Bryan easily sucks me into a series by making me love all the characters! Ellie, Stacey and Jacob make a great ghost busting team! Loved the introduction of Juniper & Crane

Cover: Like it a lot. Fits exactly with a scene in the book when she is out by the lake. I will however have to quote my husbands view on her outfit again ... " Her outfit is better for ghost trapping this time".

Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper by J.L. Bryan

Publication date: Sep 19th 2014

Source: Paperback given by author for honest review.

Links : Goodreads / Amazon

Ellie Jordan’s job is to catch and remove unwanted ghosts. Part detective, part paranormal exterminator, Ellie operates out of Savannah, Georgia, one of the oldest and most haunted cities in North America.

When a family contacts her to deal with a disturbing presence in the old mansion they’ve recently purchased, Ellie first believes it to be a typical, by-the-book specter, a residual haunting by a restless spirit. Instead, she finds herself confronting an evil older and more powerful than she’d ever expected, rooted in the house’s long and sordid history of luxury, sin, and murder. The dangerous entity seems particularly interested in her clients’ ten-year-old daughter.

Soon her own life is in danger, and Ellie must find a way to exorcise the darkness of the house before it can kill her, her clients, or their frightened young child.

                    My Thoughts

A great new series ! Excited to read more about Ellie Jordan and her adventures!

Its no secret here, I am a big fan of J.L. Bryan! He writes amazing novels but more so, when he writes a series he sucks me in big time! I am so excited after reading Ellie Jordan, Ghost trapper, book one in the series. No doubt this series has some serious stay power and I am hooked !

Ellie Jordan is a ghost trapper, along with her assistant Stacey, she is there to take on jobs to clear out the spirits when people have exhausted every other possible option. Set in the historically haunted city of Savannah Georgia, Ellie is called to help a family get rid of a possible ghost in their house, but little does Ellie know that what she unleashes in that house is way more than she ever bargained for. Not only does she have to deal with the dangerous and creepy ghost in this house but they are also forced to find answers in a abandoned asylum! Ghost, possessions, psychics, ghost traps, human sacrifices, this book has it all !

I am super excited about this series and have already started book two in the series, Cold Shadows. Excited to read more about Ellie Jordan and her crew of ghost trapping / mystery solving detectives!

Plot : Great, each book is a different haunting to deal with. love the layout of this series. Excited to read more in the series.

Characters: Love! J.L. Bryan easily sucks me into a series by making me love all the characters! Ellie, Stacey and Jacob make a great ghost busting team!

Cover: Like it a lot. Its a nice scene, and the font is great. I will however have to quote my husbands view on it ... " who goes ghost trapping in that kind of shirt ".

REVIEW : Inferno Park by J.L. Bryan

Inferno Park by J.L. Bryan

Publication date: Aug 11th 2014

Genres: Horror

Source: ARC given by author for honest review.

Links : Goodreads / Amazon

Carter was only twelve when he witnessed the disaster that killed more than a hundred people at Starland Amusement Park. Five years later, Carter’s hometown is no longer a busy Florida panhandle resort, but a slowly dying town full of empty motels and attractions rusting behind chains and padlocks.

Now something evil stirs in the ruins of the old amusement park...something with an alluring siren song drawing visitors into the dark mysteries of the forbidden world behind the gate. Something with an appetite for restless, yearning souls.

Carter reluctantly returns to the old park in the company of a new girl in town, who is obsessed with urban decay and pop-culture ruins, and discovers the evil at work. To stop it, and protect the children of the town, Carter will have to face his oldest and deepest fears.

                    My Thoughts

Inferno park, or really Starland Amusement Park was super successful until one grim day, when a sinkhole opened up and took down most of the park. Let me start off by saying that the events that took place up until the collapse of the park were amazing, like I could see everything coming down in slow motion ( how it happens in movies, specifically Final Destination ).

Carter was only 12. He was at the park that day with his friends when the whole park collapsed and hundreds died. It should have been him, he should have been on the Inferno Mountain ride but he chickened out at last minute.  Now, 5 years later he has to deal with the decisions he has made, and the decline of the town since the park has closed. The worst part is that now, kids are going missing. Carter and his friends have to stop what is happening in the park. He has to face going back into he park, and and evil being that still lingers in the park, longing for more souls!

I thought Inferno Park was a great read, Thrilling and exciting it kept me on my toes trying to figure out what or who was lurking in the park! The description of the park and the rides were great, I could imagine all the rides and the layout. J.L Bryan does wonders describing the park so I felt like I knew what it was like.

Since we are talking about the description of the park, every time he described the huge devils head of the Inferno Mountain ride I kept thinking about the entrance to the freak show in season 4 of American Horror Story. It is exactly what I have pictured in my head!

REVIEW: The Messenger by Lois Lowry ( Giver #3 )

The Messenger by Lois Lowry

Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers

The Giver Quartet #3

"Messenger" is the masterful third novel in the Giver Quartet, which began with the dystopian bestseller "The Giver, " now a major motion picture.
Matty has lived in Village and flourished under the guidance of Seer, a blind man known for his special sight. Village once welcomed newcomers, but something sinister has seeped into Village and the people have voted to close it to outsiders. Matty has been invaluable as a messenger. Now he must risk everything to make one last journey through the treacherous forest with his only weapon, a power he unexpectedly discovers within himself.

                    My Thoughts

I originally had issues with the second book in the series The Gathering Blue. While originally I felt that it came out of nowhere, I can now see and appreciate how everything is connected.

I was worried after reading The Gathering Blue that the rest of the series would not be as good or addicting as the The Giver was, but I was wrong.  The Messenger was great! Matt who was a secondary character in The Gathering Blue is now the Main character in The Messenger. The Messenger shows his life with the Seer ( Kira's father ) in the other village where Jonas is the leader. Matty is the only one who can travel through the forrest, and must do so one last time to bring Kira to the village.

At this point I still wasn't sure how all this would come back and tie into Jonas and Gabe's story, but The Messenger was a much easier read than the previous book in the series and Jonas played a bigger role.

The Giver Quartet #2

Links : Goodreads / Amazon

In her strongest work to date, Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever.

As she did in The Giver, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, and what will be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kira's plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future.

                    My Thoughts

After reading The Giver and loving it I went to see the movie, which was such a powerful film!!! I was definitely riding a high from this book and was eager to continue the series. Before I started reading The Gathering Blue I learned that it did not however,  follow Jonas, nor was it based on his community that he lived in. So, I approached this story, saddened, but with the knowledge and understanding that it was to be a completely different story.

There were some things that I did like about The Gathering Blue, but overall I thought the story was very slow, and it took a long time for things to happen, or events to unfold in this story v.s. The Giver.

I did like that this story took place I guess you would say in the same "world" as The Giver, but in a different community with its own set of unique rules.

For those of you wondering if you should read The Gathering Blue to continue the series my answer is still yes, while this book is harder to get through, I can see where certain characters will play an important role in the books to come. I have already started book three in the series , The Messenger, and some of the secondary characters from The Gathering Blue are now Main characters in The Messenger. I am not far in the book right now, but I can confirm that Jonas and Gabe both make an appearance.

REVIEW: The Fault in Our Stars by John Gree

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Publication date: July 3rd 2012- Harper Collins

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.

                    My Thoughts

Full of Feels, Definitely lived up to the hype!!!

I was traveling down to florida, a long 12 hour journey ahead of me, I found myself with a perfect opportunity to listen to my audio book of The Fault in Our Stars. I had heard so many raves about TFIOS, and that even though it was in a genre I normally don't read, I was feeling very tempted to try it out.... I AM SO GLAD I DID.  I loved it so much I didn't want my trip to end, I just wanted to continuously drive until it was done.

I don't want to give away too much of the story because I was pleasantly surprised that the plot was still very much a surprise to me. Even though everyone talks about this book and there are endless movie trailers for TFIOS, I was very surprised that they did not give away the plot for the book. TFIOS follows Hazel, as a young girl suffering from lung cancer, and Hazel meets Augustus at a group meeting.  TFIOS follows these two as they battle cancer, friendship, and living each day like it might be your last.

The situations that Hazel and Gus deal with, no matter how difficult, are met with humor, sarcasm and wit. They both had a way of handling their hard situations with words that was just... perfect! I personally don't have the words to describe it, but I have no doubt that Hazel and Gus would !

REVIEW: The Lunar Chronicles Novellas

No Surprise here I LOVE NOVELLAS. They are a great way to to jam pack a lot of background character information is a short number of pages.. short and sweet and to the point. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer is MY FAVORITE SERIES, and here are my reviews for the three Novellas currently available for the series! Can't wait for more!

Glitches ( Lunar Chronicles # 0.5 )

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. In Glitches, a short prequel story to Cinder, we see the results of that illness play out, and the emotional toll that takes on Cinder. Something that may, or may not, be a glitch...

This was a great prequel to Cinder. It gave me great insight of Cinder's earlier years when she first went to live with her new family. True Cinderella beginnings. A quick and easy read! 5 Stars

Eleanor

By Johnny Worthen

The UNSEEN #1

Publication date: July 1st, 2014

Source: Paperback given by author for honest review.

Links : Goodreads / Amazon / B&N

It was a gamble for Eleanor to rejoin humanity, but she was driven to it. She’d been too successful forgetting. The last vestiges of her family hung by a thread in her transformed brain and drove her to be reckless. Ten years later, Eleanor hides in plain sight. She is an average girl getting average grades in a small Wyoming town: poor but happy, lonely but loved. Her mother, Tabitha, is there for her and that’s all she’s ever needed. But now her mother is sick and David has returned. The only friend she’d ever had, the only other person who knows her secret, is back. And Eleanor again becomes reckless.

Eleanor is a modest girl, unremarkable but extraordinary, young but old, malleable but fixed. She is scared and confused. She is a liar and a thief. Eleanor is not what she appears to be

                    My Thoughts

Paranormal meets Native american legends !

Eleanor is Paranormal at its best! I was so excited about this book when I read what it was about! Filled with Native American Folklore and legends, such as witches and skin walkers, it was a type of Paranormal novel that seemed logical and believable. I felt on edge the whole time as I found out what Eleanor was, and her journey so far to this point.

Sinners #1

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.

Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.

Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

                    My Thoughts

Branded grabbed my attention from the very beginning.

It was very easy to get hooked on this book right off the bat! It begins with Lexi, a young girl about to take her life, when she is arrested and taken to go live in the Hole. The Hole is a place where sinners go. You don't have to be convicted of a crime, just accused of one, which really is awful ! Right off the bat you are labeled with a colored neck tattoo that indicates your "sin". Lexi gets branded with a Blue tattoo which indicates that her sin was Lust, she is innocent of course but none of that matters. Branded was very easy to read as you are swept away in Lexi's dilemma of surviving in the Hole.  Without giving out any spoilers, there is a lot more to why she is in the Hole in the first place, and who else is in there with her.

                    My Thoughts

In a world where food is grown and engineered for us, can you really trust what you eat ?  The Sowing is A great read for fans of Dystopian YA and Sci-fi.

First off I was so interested to find that The Sowing is actually written by a Mother / Daughters team, how cool is that ?!?!! I loved the idea of The Sowing and how the plot really speaks to possibilities that may not be too far in our own futures. I love it when authors are able to make their novel Dystopian and Futuristic, but yet maybe not that far fetched of a possible reality, and K. Makansi did just that with The Sowing.

Cassidy is a young tattoo artist living in the Little Five Points neighborhood of Atlanta. She’s always suffered terrible nightmares, and sometimes the hideous creatures seem to follow her out of her dreams and into her waking life, though she’s the only one who can see them. Drugs and alcohol can blot them out, but never entirely chase them away.
