But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them. In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything

  1. First to answer your question.. No she was not his grandmother, and I believe somewhere in the book they hinted that she was black.. I think it was because she was the decendent of Ivy from the visions and Ivy was a slave/housekeeper.
the book says a few pages in that Amma was the housekeeper “more like my grandmother except she was smarter and more ornery than my real grandmother”

On top of all of the things you noted that were missing or changed from the book here are some more.... (Truthfully there was more left out of the movie from the book than what they left in.)

    -16 moons – claiming song
-They left out the whole factor that they could talk to each other in their minds.. I believe they called it Kelting
-When Ethan and Lena kiss it takes his breath away so they cant kiss long or it could kill him
-Amma’s love for crosswords was left out and how she always spelled out words then explained its relavence
-The date on the locket and her birthday in the book is Feb 11 NOT Dec 21
-Lena drove a ‘long black hearse’ not an old yellow car
-The whole ‘Snow Ball’ incident was left out
-The book of Moons was not in the Lunae Libri it was in Genevieve’s grave
-Left out The Sisters and all of the scenes where he goes to them.. they end up being a fairly decent part of the story in future books.. Plus in the first book they help explain a lot of the stuff he is seeing in the visions by telling him who the initials were.
-Macon’s “dog” Boo Radley who plays a role in this book and the future ones
-The ‘Caster Breeze’ when Lena or Ridley casted that would make their hair twist and curl
-The ‘hearing’ for whether lena could stay in school happened in the gym at the school, not at the church
-All of Amma’s little charms that she planted everywhere
-They said in the book the writing on her bedroom walls was Sharpie.. it was all white and floating in the movie
-The Halloween incident when Lena turned the crescent moon drawn on all of the girls faces from eyeliner to sharpie
-Ethan’s mother sending them a message through book page numbers – claim yourself
-The whole final scene which started with ridley trying to make Ethans dad jump off the 2nd story balcony of a building.. and Sarafine stabbed Ethan, Link didn’t shoot him.. Also Sarafine teaming up with Macon’s brother Hunting.. then Amma and Lena used the book of moons to bring back Ethan and that’s when the book took Macon in return. That scene was the only thing that Ethan didn’t remember… not the whole meeting her up to the ending.
