Goodreads Summary

#1 The Lightning Thief

Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus' master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus' stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves

#2 The Sea of Monsters

After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson is finding his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson, a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any normal friends. But things don't stay quiet for long.
Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders that protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia. Only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name: The Bermuda Triangle.
Together with his friends, Percy must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family, one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

# 3 The Titans Curse

When the goddess Artemis goes missing, she is believed to have been kidnapped. And now it's up to Percy and his friends to find out what happened. Who is powerful enough to kidnap a goddess? They must find Artemis before the winter solstice, when her influence on the Olympian Council could swing an important vote on the war with the titans. Not only that, but first Percy will have to solve the mystery of a rare monster that Artemis was hunting when she disappeared—a monster rumored to be so powerful it could destroy Olympus forever

# 4 The Battle of the Labyrinth

When demonic cheerleaders invade his high school, Percy Jackson hurries to Camp Half Blood, from whence he and his demigod friends set out on a quest through the Labyrinth, while the war between the Olympians and the evil Titan lord Kronos draws near.

# 5 The Last Olympian

All year the half-bloods have been preparing for battle against the Titans, knowing the odds of a victory are grim. Kronos’s army is stronger than ever, and with every god and half-blood he recruits, the evil Titan’s power only grows.
While the Olympians struggle to contain the rampaging monster Typhon, Kronos begins his advance on New York City, where Mount Olympus stands virtually unguarded. Now it’s up to Percy Jackson and an army of young demigods to stop the Lord of Time.
In this momentous final book in the New York Times best-selling series, the long-awaited prophecy surrounding Percy’s sixteenth birthday unfolds. And as the battle for Western civilization rages on the streets of Manhattan, Percy faces a terrifying suspicion that he may be fighting against his own fate

Katie’s Thoughts:

What an AMAZING series! The Percy Jackson series make my top 10 for sure. These books are so original. Riordan blends in Greek mythology into an amazing plot!

Percy finds out that he is a Demi-god, which means he is half god, half mortal. Trouble finds him where he goes, and he is forced to find shelter at a camp for other Demi gods such as himself“, camp half blood”. I loved that each kid at camp half blood has different traits or “abilities” dependant or who their godly parent is. In the first book Percy gets accused of stealing Zeus’s thunder Literally, so he must go on a journey to prove his innocents and rescue his mother.  That’s just for book one, and I promise they only get better and better as you keep reading through the series.

Never have I ever learned so much from a series! Sometimes I find myself telling people why we have four season, or why we have winter (not scientifically, but according to Greek mythology of course.)
If you have read this series, be sure to read “The Heroes’ of Olympus” series as well!

Krisha’s Thoughts:

I also loved the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series.  I remember first learning about the Greek gods in 3rd grade along with other polytheistic religions.  Having known the back-story to most of the second tier characters in this series added to the enjoyment of reading (though you by know means have to know ANYTHING about Greek mythology before picking up this series).

I read that Riordan actually taught Greek mythology and started telling these stories to his son who had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia.  He cleverly portrayed Percy as also having these issues, but manages to overcome them and literally save the word.  And you never know where Percy's pesky enemies will show up!  The Fates were old women knitting on a bus and Medusa had her own garden shop complete with stone statues.

Katie and I are both anxiously waiting to finish up the follow up series, Hero's of Olympus. Like the Percy Jackson series, there is also 5 books.  Riordan also has a similar series about Egyptian demi-gods that is going on my "must read" list.

  1. I love that you guys have a list of recommended series - have you read His Dark Materials trilogy, and Chronicles of Ancient Darkness?? If not you really should! :D Wolf brother is the first in Chronicles of ancient darkness ... it's an amazing story and so well researched, based in prehistory. I think you will really like them. You've sold this series to me as well, I'll have to try it!
